Trip to Riisitunturi National Park
A Winter Wonderland in Lapland!
Show reviews
Step into a national postcard. This full-day winter tour takes you from Rovaniemi to the peaceful beauty of Riisitunturi National Park — a place where the trees bends with its coats of snow and silence feels like part of the landscape.
We'll hike through the soft snow using snowshoes, making it easier (and more fun) to explore the snowy forest. No rush, no crowds — just a small group, fresh air and stunning winter foresty scenery.
At the halfway point, we’ll take a break with a warm fire at the cottage and enjoy a simple outdoor barbecue — the kind of meal that tastes better after some time in nature.
Whether you’re here for the adventure, the quiet or just the views, this tour is all about experiencing Lapland at its best.

Frequently asked about snowmobile safaris
Is the hike difficult?
The Riisitunturi hike is moderate in difficulty and takes place in real winter conditions, so the trail can be snowy and sometimes a bit uneven. However, it is very manageable for most people with normal fitness levels.
We use snowshoes during the tour, which make walking in deep snow much easier and more stable. Snowshoeing is also a fun and unique way to move through the winter landscape, making the experience enjoyable even when the snow is deep.
Do these snow formations happen everywhere in Lapland?
No, they are most common in specific high and open fell areas with the right combination of wind and humidity. Riisitunturi is especially well known for these spectacular snow-covered trees.
Food, drinks & toilets during the Riisitunturi tour
During the tour, we take a break for a lunch around a campfire in the middle of the beautiful Arctic nature. We grill sausages over an open fire and serve warm juice to keep you warm and energized. This is a relaxing moment to enjoy the silence of the forest and the stunning scenery. Please note that toilet facilities are limited in the area, so we use basic outdoor toilet/forest conditions during the trip when needed.
Why do trees look like “snow monsters” in winter?
In places like Riisitunturi, trees become covered in heavy snow and frost, creating the famous “snow monster” or “tykkylumi” formations. This happens when moist air, wind, and freezing temperatures cause snow and ice to accumulate on trees layer by layer. Over time, the trees take on magical, sculpted shapes that are unique to Arctic winters.
What happens if the weather is very cold or snowy?
The experience runs in all typical Arctic winter conditions. In extreme weather, safety always comes first, and the guide may adjust the program if needed to ensure a comfortable and safe experience for all guests.
Do I need special equipment for Riisitunturi?
No special equipment is required for the Riisitunturi experience. We provide everything you need for the activity, including winter overalls and snowshoes. Just dress in warm, layered clothing suitable for cold weather, and you’re ready to enjoy the adventure.
What if I have food allergies or dietary restrictions?
If your tour includes lunch, snacks, or refreshments, please let us know about any food allergies or dietary restrictions when making your booking. We will do our best to accommodate your needs and provide suitable alternatives whenever possible. To ensure we can make the necessary arrangements, it is important that we receive this information in advance.
