Frequently asked about snowmobile safaris
Why do people go ice fishing in Lapland?
Ice fishing is a long-standing tradition in Lapland, rooted in the region’s Arctic way of life. During the long winter months, frozen lakes and rivers have historically provided an important source of food, and drilling a hole in the ice to catch fish was a practical way to survive in a remote environment.
Today, ice fishing is still widely practiced, but it is also a peaceful outdoor activity enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. It offers a chance to slow down, connect with nature, and experience the quiet beauty of the Arctic landscape. For many, it’s less about catching fish and more about enjoying the calm, the fresh air, and the traditional atmosphere of Lapland winter life.
Is ice fishing suitable for beginners?
Yes, ice fishing is very beginner-friendly. No previous experience is required, and our guides will show you how to use the equipment and help you get started. It is a peaceful and relaxing outdoor activity, suitable for all ages and skill levels.
What are the most common fish you can catch?
The most common fish in Finnish ice fishing are perch (ahven) and roach (särki). These species are typical in local lakes and are often the main catch during the winter season. While catches can vary depending on the day and conditions, these two are by far the most frequently caught fish, making them a great introduction to traditional Finnish fishing.
Do I need special equipment for ice fishing (ice fishing / pilkki)?
No special equipment is needed. We provide all the necessary gear for ice fishing, including rods, bait, and a warm winter overall to keep you comfortable during the activity. Just dress in warm layers underneath, and you are ready to enjoy the experience on the ice.
What happens if the weather is very cold or snowy?
The experience runs in all typical Arctic winter conditions. In extreme weather, safety always comes first, and the guide may adjust the program if needed to ensure a comfortable and safe experience for all guests.
What if I have food allergies or dietary restrictions?
If your tour includes lunch, snacks, or refreshments, please let us know about any food allergies or dietary restrictions when making your booking. We will do our best to accommodate your needs and provide suitable alternatives whenever possible.
